Feed the Children Prozac

Well don't we just live in a wonderful country? A country were children are given opportunities that our great grandparents could never even dream of. Unfortunately we also give our children a lot of other, not so pleasant, things our great grandparents never dreamed of. We have become great at training children to sit down and shut up and if they don't they must have some sort of disorder. Our society has even found a way to drug children to the point of obedience. Why isn't the current system working?

The Student- The problem is the public school system. It's not too different from a state ran prison system. In so many ways the children, like prisoners, are powerless, uniformed, and have no outlet for expressing individuality and creativity. The teachers, like prison guards, are little more than glorified baby sitters. The Principal, like a warden, lords over the students and teachers making more rules and handing out the punishments. Kids are forced to huddle on a play ground similar to "The Yard" at your state prison and are subjected to bully's. Even the clicks compare to prison gangs. Lets not forget the epidemic of school shootings that compare to prison riots in several ways. Some people would say this a dramatic or exaggerated comparison and those people have obviously never been a 12 year old kid being dipped head first into a toilet by a kid three times their size. But if you need evidence of the violence in schools do a simple google search. Or just maybe turn on the news once in a while.
The Hormonal Teen- Teenagers are taught to not only suppress but also to be ashamed of natural sexual urges. Now, as a society we don't want an epidemic of teen parents crowding the welfare system. So encouraging teens to be safe and abstain isn't necessarily a bad idea. The problem is primarily how adults go about it. Most of us have heard the story of Adam and Eve. Eve being tempted by the forbidden fruit and was easily talked into having a taste. Children, like adults, are naturally drawn to things they are told they can't have. So usually one of two things happen. Either the kid grows up fearing sex and has difficulty with normal relationships as an adult or they fell like they are doing a bad (but ohh so good) thing. Either way the STD and young pregnancy rate makes more sense. Maybe instead of pointing out the negatives of having sex, we should be pointing out the positives of not getting pregnant at 16. Because really guys, sex is awesome. Kids are not stupid enough to not figure that out.
